The Symbols of Our Nation
What are the symbols of our country? If you said, "The Bald Eagle, the American Flag and Statue of Liberty," you are correct!
The Bald Eagle: After our nation was established (meaning we finally are no longer part of Great Britain) our founding fathers wanted an emblem that represented our new nation. An emblem means an object or an animal that represents a country. The Bald Eagle was adopted as our national bird in 1782, and is protected by the Bald Eagle Protection Act of 1940.
The American Flag:
The 50 stars (can be yellow or white) on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America. The 13 stripes represent the 13 British Colonies that declared independence from Great Britain. These became the first states in the United States of America. Nicknames for the flag includes The Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and The Star Spangled Banner.
The Statue of Liberty:
The Statue of Liberty is found in the New York Harbor on Liberty Island. It was a gift to the people of the United States from France. The Statue represents a Roman Goddess of Liberty who holds a torch in her one hand and a tablet with the date of our Declaration of Independence on it (July 4, 1776). A Frenchman who built the Statue of Liberty is Gustave Eiffel (as in the Eiffel Tower).
